Southern Union Gas Services

Southern Union Gas Services was founded more than 50 years ago as Sid Richardson Energy Services Co and has a solid tradition of providing dependable service to gas producers.

History
As World War II ended, the Age of the Automobile began, and cities started using natural gas for lights and fuel. Wildcatter and philanthropist Sid W. Richardson and his nephew and partner Perry R. Bass recognized a burgeoning market for natural gas and its by-products, gasoline and butane. In September 1948, Richardson and Bass began construction of the Keystone Plant at Kermit, Texas. Designed to process natural gas from the Ellenburger oil reserves of West Texas, the plant satisfied two very real needs of the time – “the utilizationof natural gas, which oil producers did not want, and the removal of condensable hydrocarbons, which the pipelines did not want.”

As more and more wells were drilled in the area, the company’s gathering lines into the plant consistently increased. In 1977, affiliate Richardson Products Company opened offices in Houston, offering marketing services for natural gas and gas liquids.

The company made a giant leap north into New Mexico when in 1990 it purchased El Paso’s Lea County Gathering System and Jal Plant. The company linked the Jal Plant with its Keystone Plant, offering area producers a total capacity of approximately 300 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) and outlets to three pipeline systems.

In October 1998, the company continued its growth, this time going south from Kermit. The company acquired KN Energy’s 600 + miles of Walton and Santa Rosa gathering systems, closed the accompanying processing plants and routed the gas to the Keystone Plant.

Also in 1998, consistent with its efforts to provide customers with integrated solutions to their energy needs, the company expanded its marketing and product development functions. Richardson Products Company relocated its Natural Gas group to Fort Worth, increased its trading staff, and added active risk management. The Natural Gas Liquids marketing group maintains the company’s presence in Houston.

The company’s acquisition of the Western Mi Vida Gas Gathering and Treating facilities, increased not only the company’s gathering area but also its capabilities. Traditionally, the firm has gathered primarily low-pressure rich associated gas. Purchased in June 1999, the Mi Vida system includes high-pressure, large-diameter lines designed for lean gas that needs treating but little or no processing. The company’s most recent acquisition, the Koch Midstream West Texas gathering and processing assets, was completed in December 2000. This acquisition added nearly 1,000 miles of pipeline and additional processing and treating facilities to its system.

With the Mi Vida, Coyonosa, Tippett, Keystone and Jal plants, Southern Union Gas Services offers the most efficient handling of natural gas, whatever the composition. Now controlling a vast network in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico, Southern Union Gas Services proudly continues to meet the ever-changing needs of its customers while maintaining its leadership as a service-oriented company.
